75mm L48 barrel

Post by Mark Aldrich »

Is the 75mm L48 the same on both the Stug III and Jagdpanzer IV? I have the old Dragon Jagdpanzer IV kit that I am planning on doing as a Syrian. However, all searches for after market barrels list them for a Stug III. They look the same (to me) but I am unsure. This is the barrel and brake that most closely resembles the kit supplied one.

Yep, externally it's the same with Stug, Panzer IV and Jagdpanzer IV. However make sure you have the proper muzzle brake for your vehicle. Early types were round, mid types were oval, late types were round again at the back but with a larger diameter.

Some pictures:
Early
Mid
Late

Philipp,
Thanks! Yep, there is only one known photo of the vehicle. I do happen to have another photo of either the same or a different Jagdpanzer IV on the Golan in it's dug in position but showing the threaded barrel. I had always wanted to do this vehicle but with the L70 barrel. However, no pictures have ever surfaced so it will be the L48.

I completely forgot that only early Jagdpanzer IV had a muzzle brake. It was soon removed because it kicked up a lot of dust when firing. For a while the remaining stocks of barrels with threaded ends were used until new ones without it became available. Those that had a muzzle brake used the early version.

RB makes a barrel with threads, No. 35B035. It says Hetzer but it's good for the Jagdpanzer IV too.
