Soviet Iron Walker
Inspired by the drawings of Andrey Tkachenko, I thought I would enter the GB with my scratch-built version of a 50's era Robot. From the start I only had vague ideas on how to build him so rather than fill up the internet with my mistakes, I just went ahead. Armed with a rather full spares box, some plastic sheet and a couple of plastic bottles, I jumped straight in.
Any serious robot needs some hefty sized feet.....
and feet need legs right?
Arms are pretty important too I thought, so.....
and some hands would be, well....handy
I tried a couple of body styles but finally settled on this one. The engine is a mix of bits from the spares box. I eventually modified the engine slightly as I wasn't happy with it.
And here he is, finished and ready for primer. By this stage my brother has christened him Gorky so from here on in I will refer to him by his name.

Re: Soviet Iron Walker
Next up are the painting pics. I always like this part of any build and Gorky was no exception.
But Gorky is finished, except for a base. I'll send more pics to Philipp for the Gallery.
Thanks for looking.
Vincent
Primer and first shade done.
and the first base coat applied.
After I got to this point I added shading, dust, and dirt around his lower legs and on the engine. I also gave him a dark wash to bring out the cast texture on his head and body. If I had pics I would post them here I didn't take any, sorry. But Gorky is finished, except for a base. I'll send more pics to Philipp for the Gallery.
Thanks for looking.

That is very cool Vincent and masterfully executed. It’s like she me of Bryan’s builds where you try and work out what kits the donor parts came from!
How tall is he overall? Was trying to work it out on the basis of the tiger wheel arm joints.

Well done Vincent
A masterly piece of scratchery.
Does the cod piece still need paint?
t does seem to be a tall one
A scale picture with a 1/35 figure perhaps?
Great finish too
Regards

And there I was just wondering what you were up to...I expected a lot, but not this
Seriously though, that robot looks fantastic! What did you use for the head and torso? Is it posable? If yes, you should make a stop motion film with it
Photos have arrived, will go up ASAP

holy cow Vincent. This is seriously impressive. I mean seriously man, how in the world could you build something like this from scratch.
I spent about 5 hours yesterday trying to come up with a transmission that sits between the seat of my 250, which Dragon for some reason omitted from the box. I really spent about 5 hours figuring it out and most of it wont be seen.
I am in awe my friend.

Thanks Adam. He is just on 270mm tall. I didn't know how tall he would end up. He just grew as I went along using the old Mark 1 eyeball method!Adam Durrant wrote: ↑19 May 2020, 06:18 That is very cool Vincent and masterfully executed. Re: Soviet Iron Walker
Thank you Steve. Gorky is all painted. To show scale, I was originally going to have a 50's Soviet officer involved, pointing and shouting at him, standing on his hand, In the end I couldn't find a figure suitable for the task and went with the bird instead. I think it gives Gorky a more sensitive side.Steve Hutchinson wrote: ↑19 May 2020, 07:07 Well done Vincent

Re: Soviet Iron Walker
Thanks for the kind words Philipp. His torso is simply the complete top half of a plastic bottle and the head is a bottle top. I experimented with different types of bottles before i settled on this one. Some didn't give a strong shoulder shape while others were too thin, making the body too flimsy. Next time I would make internal bracing which would allow many more types of bottle shapes to be used. I can't go past the bottle section in the supermarket now without seeing potential Robots.Philipp Gross wrote: ↑19 May 2020, 12:48 And there I was just wondering what you were up to...I expected a lot, but not this
