Panzer III Ausf. J with L/60 KwK

Post by Raoul Kunz »

All right - here we go...

By a weird accident that probably has come to pass (melodramatic formulation, I know ;) )because I have a ton of IIIs and so I also have the DML Afrika IIIJ around...
So why not actually join the GB on a topic that is completely atypical for me... as in "it's neither Eastern Front, nor a StuG... not even a Case Blue scenario!" ?

I dug around the internet and found some photos (I'll post them once I dig them out again on my HD...) of IIIJs in the Afrika campaign that both have the L/60 KwK 39 and no spaced armour... oh and that are not Ls

So here we go with a L/60 armed IIIJ without spaced armour! - yay!
(This is actually the simple "let's get into it again" build I wanted but ended up with the IVF2  )

This here kit (never seen here before... ahem... ) =>

Here's the RB barrel for the L/60 KwK 39 =>

PanzerArt antenna as well as PA sprockets, I used only one for one side since it's Afrika and supplies are kind of dependent on the Regia Marina actually being prepared to face the... err... other Royal Navy (Regia Marina translates to "Royal Navy" ;) ) occasionally ;) . Oh and I eventually did not use the RB tank MG-34 barrels because they are not really that much of a improvement over the kit barrels...
Image

Not much else really because it's a DML III... it's a really nice kit, only of course laughably over-expensive here... it doesn't even feature the exceedingly annoying DS tracks... ;)

Progress II =>

Aaaaand paint - this is a bit "modulation along two axes" featuring all four tones of the Ammo of Mig Dunkelgelb modulation set (901, 902, 903 and 904) with various mixes and oversprays of Vallejo Model Air 71.142 Sinai Grey.
Looks okay to me, never having been much of an Afrika Korps modeller... of course there is currently way to strong a variation but I firmly believe (fingers crossed... :? ) that it all will tone down eventually with the oils... ;)

And there we are... this is about a week of work, and I sadly forgot to take some photos of the whole kit with the black acrylic PU basecoat  .

Here's the photos I used to cleverly deduct that there where IIIJs with L/60 KwK39 without any spaced armour.

Thanks!
Now with RAL 7001 Graugrün.
Looks weird on the photo, way more intense (and a tiny little bit like 1907 Feldgrau...) than it is in reality but hey, that's really bright cold lights for you...

Thanks guys! :D

Sorry for the lack of progress, I'm a bit caught up in training and learning stuff about problematic feet for the journeyman's examination coming up in late November and early January - tad bit paranoid here   .

Though I suppose I'll have some time left eventually to relax with some applied colour  .

Once I "get on with it!" I'll have to add the first layer of sponge applied ageing - probably rather heavy since, well, desert  .
