German CMP F 15 Truck with a Flak 30.

Post by Shawn Ramsey »

I hope you guys don't mind me joining in, especially since I have no been around much.

For this group build I will be building a German DAK CMP F15 Truck with a Flak 30. This kit was re-released several years ago. The original kit was all resin. :o. The new kit includes a CMP F15 Truck from Mirror Models, a Resin Flak 30 and some extras.

According to Wikipedia:

"Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) trucks were a class and a coherent range of military trucks, made in large numbers, and in numerous variants, by Canada during World War II, compliant to British Army specifications, primarily intended for use in the armies of the British Commonwealth allies, but also serving in other units of the British Empire.

Until the currency restrictions of the late 1940s, the Canadian automotive industry's output provided a major part of British Empire countries vehicles. These territories levied reduced, Imperial preference, duties on Canadian products, usually made by Canadian subsidiaries of the big U.S. auto manufacturers. In the late 1930s, Canada started drawing up standard designs, to prepare for the beginning of the war, which involved a unique and historic design and production collaboration between rival giant car-makers Ford and GM of Canada.

Canadian Military Pattern trucks not only motorized the militaries of Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, but were also sent to the Soviet Union following the Nazi invasion, as part of Canada's Gift and Mutual Aid program to the Allies.

During the War, CMP trucks saw service around the world in the North African Campaign, the Allied invasion of Sicily, the Italian Campaign, the Soviet Front, the Burma Campaign, the Battle of the Philippines (1941–42), the liberation of Northwest Europe, and the Western Allied invasion of Germany. CMP trucks also served in post-war conflicts in Indonesia, French Indochina, and the Portuguese colonies in Africa.

The United Kingdom's official History of the Second World War called Canada's war-time production of soft-skinned trucks, including the CMP class, the country's most important contribution to Allied victory.[1] Canada's trucks are considered to have "..put the British Army on wheels" — in the North African Campaign, the British Eighth Army fought Rommel using almost exclusively CMP trucks; and the Allied progress from Sicily, through Italy and France, depended heavily on the Canadian trucks.[2][3] By war's end, Canada's vast supply of trucks provided a vehicle for every three soldiers in the field — compared to one vehicle per seven American GIs, making it the most mobile army in the world."

Of course the German Military used captured Allied vehicles throughout the war. This specific vehicle was equipped with a Flak 30.

Thanks for following.

As I stated above this kit was released by LZ Models a few years ago. The CMP F15 is from Mirror Models. The Flak 30 is Resin, so we will see how this goes. I have been looking for the Cyberhobby Flak 30 as a back up, but it was a limited release and I can't find one. Over all the detail looks good, but the spruce attachment points are pretty big.

The kit includes 5 rubber tires, which I will most likely replace with a Resin St from LZ Model. There are a few pieces of wire and some photo etch. I also picked up an extra PE detailing set which will really improve some of the kit parts. The Flak 30 will require a lot of clean up, but it also includes some nice PE.

The instructions are horrible and are not very clear with part placement. Mirror Models should be ashamed of themselves to release instructions like this in there kits. I would take Dragons instructions any day over these.

The Photo Etch had a very sticky residue, once I took off the plastic protective sheet. I spent hours cleaning it up, and the model was almost binned before I even started. That's one reason I have not orderd the tires not. I used everything, and I mean everything to clean it. I started with soap and water, Isopropyl alcohol, Lacquer thinner, sand paper, annealing the PE, Mineral Spirits and finally Turpenoid. Its not 100%, but it will have to do.

Welcome back Shawn! I absolutely don't mind, your builds are always amazing :D

I hope you can get all these little problems out of the way. Would be a shame to see this binned!

The lack of a modern Flak 30 kit is more than unfortunate. You'd think everything WW2 German would have been released several times over by now.

Hi Shaun

Looks like a unique kit for the GB, and no other Flak 30 anywhere to be had!

I am sure you will revel in the complexity and enjoy it all the more.

Have fun

Thanks for checking in Philipp, Adam and Steve.

You would think starting off with my first build in a while, I would build something a lot easier, but you guys know me better that that, so here we go.

Starting this build a little backwards, or at least in the rear, beginning with the bed of the truck. One reason I did this is to see if a FLAK 38 will fit in the back, if the resin Flak 30 does not work out.

Image

Each part requires some significant clean up.

Image

The PE detail set provide some nice addition to the kit. I still need to add some tie down hooks. I've been playing with some photo editing and can now show some before and after pics, together.

Image

I decided I wanted to show the tail gate down. Of course I could have just glue it in the down position, but it just would not have looked right. Cutting the bottom section of off the rear tailgate and gluing that to the floor, I then used some spare PE sheets, homemade bolt heads, foil and small gauge wire.

Image

We now have a tailgate which can be left open. Much better IMHO, with alot of work that wont even be seen.

Steve, Mark and Vincent- thanks for following.

I have been able to make some progress on this build. The good news is the bed of the truck is assembled, the bad news is a Flak 38 wil not fit. I have no choice but to move forward with building the Flak 30.

I do have a back up plan with the hopes I don't have to go that route. I found Dragon 6711 on ebay for a great price, honestly not much more the the Cyberhobby Flak 30 had cost by itself.

NO real problems with the bed assembly other than some significant injector pin arks on the wheels wells that had to be dealt with. Mirror models did do a great job with the fender wheels. You have to use wire to make handles, the the holes were already there. I did have to make them a little bigger, but that was no problem at all.
