Panzer III J, North Africa 1942

Here's my project for the desert category:

I know, boring

However I found two pictures of short-barreled III Js with the full applique armour set that was usually reserved for long-barreled tanks:

I'll do one of those. I hope to keep this as OOTB (and quick) as possible, so far I've only added a sandbag set by Panzer Art.

Nice choice Philipp

Seems like I am having deja vu!

The photos could be L's with the short L42 5cm barrel?

I know that I found lots of unusual J's and L's that were a mix and match,
though I could not find the L60 J, I was looking for!

Either which way, the build is a dream then you can focus on the base and paint.

Have fun

Thanks Steve!

I remember your build! I'm in dire need of a high quality OOTB kit to keep my spirits up.....

The nomenclature between J and L is a complete mess, but I guess the most realistic option is that these were built as standard L/42 Js and were backfitted with applique armour kits either sent to the front for that purpose or salvaged from wrecked Ls.

Hi Philipp

Its a quality OOTB build, just add what you want.

It took just a few weeks to build with only an hour here and there, I wanted something to paint with another brand of dunkelgelb.

Simple base, with any DAK tank crew and lots of storage.

Lots of opportunity for Rinaldi chipping or OPR, or do it the "old fashioned" way.

It will be fun though, I enjoyed mine, and still have a base to do too.

It will be a good way to loose an hour or two

Regards

Looking forward to the build. Like Steve said these go together great.

I may try to join and build something  . Sadly, I completed nothing in 2018. Worked on a few things here and there but did not finish anything. I have not painted a figure since the beginning of 2017. Where does the time go. :o

Hi Shawn, good to hear from you again! Your build is a big inspiration for me...that is, once I actually get around to start building :? See, you're not alone

Yeah, where does the time go...didn't we just had 2010? :|

Good choice Philipp. A desert GB without a Panzer III just wouldn't seem right. :)

Thanks Vincent :)

My other options were a Sherman III, a Churchill III and a Valentine III........

Regrettably I've been away from the bench since I started this blog but hopefully I finally get to glue something together tomorrow :?

I keep deluding myself that I can finish this in a few days so I can then get back to my unfinished business elsewhere

Regarding the Vorpanzer spaced armor. There were delays in production of the Vorpanzer so some PzIII ausf Js only had the hull spaced armor. Some Ausf L turrets had the hull armor but only the frame and no armored plate for the turret armor. It wasn't until March 1942 that both the hull and turret Vorpanzer were common.

The first 40 PzIIIs with the L/60 were built by Alkett in December 1941 but production didn't really kick off at the other factories until April 42. March-April 42 still saw production of the L/42 PzIII so there would still be Ausf Js with both additional armors.

Info from Panzer Tracts 3-3.
