Tamiya 1:35 35197 StuH 42

Post by Steve Hutchinson »

Evening one and all

Why am I building this one as part of a retro GB?

Shimmery time travelling effect, sorry Raoul, done this one before

I started modelling at aged 9, one rainy Saturday afternoon, my 14 year old uncle came round with an Airfix Arado sea plane, and you can still get them!
Image
Built and painted in one afternoon, and I was hooked.
I followed a weekly eclectic building plan, of anything I could afford on 3 shillings pocket money, 15p by today's money, and a King's ransom in 1969, I was a lucky chap ;)

I built and occasionally painted but built and built, and one day, my 12th birthday, I think, it snowed heavily and I walked 4 miles home from school in 6 inches of snow and a minor blizzard, my birthday presents included this, and my future was locked and loaded for ever 8-)
Image
and you can still get one, even now :o
I did progress to the 1:35 kits as a teenager, and still have some of my 1970's builds, well 2 :P
Be gentle I was only 13 or 14
.Image
Image
The real step forward was a 1:35 Tamiya Stug III G, which isn't available as such
Image
But the next best thing, and still pre, 2000 at 1995 is going to be this
Image
I did contemplate this but perhaps not?
Image
I could even recreate the original Tamiya No. 14 figures with this Dragon set, even the poses are similar, well nearly
Image
And what next you may ask?
Time for some research, just the ticket
And my book collecting OCD clicks into place
Image
Image

I will definitely need this
waffle zimmerit tool
I will, one day, have to do Alkett zimmerit, but it isn't easy without one, using PE zimmerit isn't always the best way forward.
Does anyone know where to buy one at a reasonable price, Firestorm don't seem to have any?

My internet search has been fruitless, so if anyone has anything useful to advise?

The Tamiya kit is reviewed as a really nice build,

build video
a real shake and bake kit, no need to worry about tracks with the schurzen.
I have ordered an RB barrel, one of each size too ;)

More tomorrow ;)

Ohhhhhhh! Shiny! ;) (ever watched Firefly?)

It's still a great kit generally speaking. It has it's minor flaws, but you have the right references on hand ;) .
I think at one point in the not too distant past I've built one and done some of the corrections....okay, ~45min of research into the forum logs reveal that it has to have been a long time ago since I couldn't find anything ;). Doesn't feel like it was back in the modelarmour days but it would appear it was way back... or maybe it`s hiding in some unexpected place here :? ... I could swear it was after my move in '14...

No need really to worry about the tracks, even if you don't mount skirts - the Tamiya later pattern early ( ;) ) 40cm tracks with solid guide teeth are perfectly well detailed and track sag is generally overrated, once in movement German tracks are usually tout.

...this is really dangerous... the lure of the StuG side is strong... I still have at least one Tamiya III G as well as their Finnish version sitting among my stash here... no...need to do T-35!

Looking forward to seeing this build!

Best regards

Thanks Philipp,

Love the field mod schirzen 8-)

This is what I am hoping to build, to keep it simple and minimal add on's

Image
Image

The Tamiya Stug III G 35197 is almost there and it does mean I can keep it to a single colour as AB work is not in my immediate future.

Another one from the rear

Image

The blanking domed cover for the rear towing pintle seems to indicate a Pz III L or M conversion?

The bullet splash plate is not off center, so its an either/or?

After a day of research, there is so much variation with just the StuH 42

The Tamiya schirzen are pretty cool too, with 6 pieces

Image

I think I am going in the right direction, but other than thinning fenders and preping all the tools with undercuts on thick clamps, I shall hold off installing the casemate until the RB 10.5 barrel arrives.

I have attached the pintle blanking plate but it can come off easily enough.

I still haven't found the firestorm Waffle zimmerit tool anywhere, or even an alternative

I have ordered the Eduard Waffle zimmerit set, for the next build, as I can feel more Alkett 10.5 StuH 42 builds in the very near future, the Revell kit will be a good base for the next one, and with all the references I have found there are several others, without even getting into all the field mods

This is an interesting one
Image
no zimmerit?
Image
The Tamiya base kit witht eh bolt on front end plating?

Any input, advise, better options, moral support or don't be daft, all accepted

Looks like the last one is your best option as far as the kit is concerned. No Zimmerit, no camo scheme, bolted applique armour. No. 55 is nice too, but it has the 80mm hull. The defining feature for recycled Panzer III hulls are the brake inspection hatches, it looks like 55 had the standard Stug version.

The whitewashed StuH is one of the prototypes based on a StuG Ausf. F. The old Imperial Dragon kit had all the parts you need.

I've been searching for a waffle Zimmerit tool for years, it seems they are all out of production. I'm considering to make one myself, maybe using square plastic rods glued together into a suitably sized bundle.

Nothing to add in regards to the Panzer III option - maybe that the III conversions often, though not always, also tend to feature the proper Panzer III track guards with hinged moveable flaps in the front in addition to the inspection hatches.

I'd need to dig it up, but I do have a Waffel pattern Zimmerit stamp, if you need it I can dig it up and send it over, I certainly won't need it in the near future.
Though I don't remember who made it which would be all kinds of useful  ...

That would be superb, Raoul
If at all possible, WHEN you find the waffle tool
Get some 3D copies done.
I'll take 2, an heir and spare.
Just let me know how much and P&P too.
Best if luck with your hunt
Philipp might like some too
