Re: Tamiya 1:35 35197 Stug III G

Post by Raoul Kunz »

Will do my best on the weekend - it may very well be in a certain kit box... I really hope, I know for certain that I saw it once after the move, so it's not been left in the old house at least - and now, I haven't promised the same thing to two people at the same time, it does have multiples of the same pattern, just once in a pattern and once as a stand-alone ;) ,

...had I known that there wouldn't be one for years to come I'd have bought a ton and stored them  .

I don't even remember if I used it even once... :o

Best regards

Thanks Raoul

Find it or not I do appreciate your trying, and 3D printing more is defiantly a good option moving forward

I purchased these, and scratching a waffle zimmerit tool could be possible, Philipp, with a 0.5mm square rod stock and some ingenuity.

Image

I have used the 10.5 cm RB barrel, which is light years ahead of any 2 piece plastic kit barrel, though there is a trick to the assembly of the turned barrel with photo etched parts.
The RB barrels are the economy versions, they might need a little trimming but they have no distructions, but after an interweb search I stumbled onto the secret, all the distructions are available on the Armourscale website

10.5cm assembly instructions

Problem solved, website bookmarked,

So, progress to date and the assembled barrel, she really is a beautiful thing

I shall go with ""55"" from Achtung Panzer book, Stug III and Stug IV and variants and the additional welding seams to spruce up the armour plating.

and the result

and before you know it, its all finished :o

This is the 2nd Stug III, I have build, all I need to do is paint them both!

Back to the Sturm Tiger prototype, whilst the painting problem is being addressed.

I shall try and paint the 2 tamiya figures that come with the kit, as a kick start to my figure/face painting, though I will change the heads for hornet 8-)

More soon?

Certainly an impressive gun! What goes above the gun mount, is there another armored panel to go there?

Hi Adam

There is, but as I haven't secured the gun and mount, it can go in after the primer coat.

Too damp for primer today, its been raining for 3 days here, and no heat or light due to no power in the garage..
Time to finish the Sturmtiger and keep building until the weather changes and gets warmer and dryer

More later?

That was fast :D

Good to know building this with an 80mm hull isn't too difficult either. Makes a whole lot more versions possible with this kit.

Very versatile with lots of options, Philipp ;)

I think I need to build a Dragon Stug III G to figure out if an over engineered kit is worth the effort :?

as the Tamiya kit really does just fall together 8-)

Or.....................................................

We could ask our local Stug Meister ;)

I would build another 10.5 or 2, as there are some really good references for different local field mods which would make great builds.

Primer soon, hopefully!

Really depends on which one it is and how much you have to pay for it.

The original Ausf. G was a very nice kit and mostly correct, some others are decent as well, especially the "Late Production Dec. 1944" kit offers pretty much anything you could need to build a final or very late pattern StuG G. I think it has a cheat sheets in the StuG build blog and I'm fairly certain I made a fake WH pattern document with the cheat sheet content. Just drop me a line if you want any of these, I think I made two or three, and will make more when I build more StuGs again.

However the most versatile, if somewhat erratic, kit is the "Black Knights" StuG if you ignore the fact that it's a tie-in for a manga and the decals are entirely useless. It offers a lot of options for a mid. production StuG with 8cm front plate. The annoying/awesome (depending on how much you like research) thing of course is that you really need to do research (or for that matter have Müller and ZImmermann at hand, which I happen to know you have ;) ) for any of the mid. types because the "vanilla" one is a moderately unlikely "generic" vehicle.

Hope this was helpful - the Bronco StuGs are also great, if a bit closely related to the old Dragon kits of the 90s, they might be a nice alternative, depending on how many other Ausführungen they intend to do...

Still going through suspicious boxes in search of the bloody waffle pattern stamp... I'm really bummed that I can't seem find it. :x   :?

All cheat sheets are more than welcome Raoul,

And will be both greatly appreciated and well used too!

I still get confused when trying to match a kit to the plans and references,

Especially with the more intricate variations of the G's during their production runs.

I think I shall try to hop between a resurrection of the alternative Stug III A and one of the many 10.5's with such a rich range of field mods

Time to get back on the Stug III "horse" Raoul ;)

Rattle can primer and we might just get this one to the finish line,

Image

and I will try to finish the 2 figures too, sadly I don't think a cat could replace the dog :(
