Re: Tamiya JSU-152
Made a start on painting. I used the "Black and White" technique on my Whippet and was impressed. Thought I'd give it another go. Realistically it is just preshading but you also do all the chips and scratches too. It's a bit more forgiving than doing your colour modulation with your base colour as you can correct any mistakes before shooting your final colour.
Primed with Tamiya out of the rattle can
First two shades of grey shot, gradually working on a Zenithal lighting effect eventually
Next will be two lighter shades and a final highlight then on to chipping!

Two graduations of highlight
Then pick out the highest points.
Looks a bit comical at present but a few scratches, a topcoat and a wash should tone it all down

Likewise Gary, I'm following the book on this one, poorly written as it is! There are sections in it still in spainish that they forgot to translate into English before it went to print!Gary Boxall wrote:Watching and learning....

This is the reference I'm using. Bought the book a couple of years ago (it came with a paint set as well).

Re: Tamiya JSU-152
Woke up this morning with the snuffles, so plans for work around the house went out the door but it did allow me an excuse to sit at the workbench, blow my nose and get the "chipping" done on the JSU.
Looks a bit stark at this moment but should provide a light green in the chipped areas which I can then fill in with a rust colour. If it's too bold I can always tone it down. I didn't do this step on the Whippet build so here goes nothing
Also a shark ate my dog,

Re: Tamiya JSU-152
Got the green on, used AK Interactiives Russian 4BO light base with Mig "Transparitor" added. The contrast is a bit more pronounced in real life, iPhone pics are not representative.
Hopefully finish the chipping tomorrow then filters and Archer transfers.
All going well this is just a 24hr bug I've got and I'll get more done tomorrow

Re: Tamiya JSU-152
Very nice Adam. Thanks for sharing. I was wondering what the Black and white technique was all about. Essentially it is color modulation but in reverse. All the modulation is done before the base coat.
It did turn out very nice.
