Miniart USV-BR 76mm gun and Zvezda ZIS-5V truck

Post by Greg Beckman »

Early in December I saw the appearance of the USV-BR by Miniart and I immediately ordered it. I've always wanted a USV divisional gun, now if someone would come out with a Russian 107mm divisional gun, I'd be jazzed. Ok, focus Greg. So when I ordered the gun, I visited my unbuilt stock pile and found the Zvezda ZIS-5V truck. In the past, all I had to use was the ancient ZIS trucks from FORT. All I have to say is that if you need a ZIS-5V truck, the Zvezda kit, is superb in comparison to the FORT kit. On to the build.

As I waited for the gun to arrived, I dove in on the truck, the only down side is rubber wheels, but I had thought ahead and had a resin set on hand. Other than that, the Zvezda kit goes together very smoothly. I will only be building the gun for this project. I will save the limber, crew and ammo sets for a future project. I have built the crew, ammo set and limber before, all are excellent. I spent about 3 hours last night working on the gun trunnions, lots of parts and some PE, typical Miniart construction.

One additional comment on the Miniart kit. As I'm sure most of you are aware, MIG and Miniart are now working together with art work/camo paint scenes. There are multiple camo scenes and marking options, really nice work here and I'm glad they are working together.

Oh, did not there was a group build about to kick off, but your right, I should be done quickly as this is sort of a quick Holiday build. The truck was sprayed last night actually.

Gregovic - I was only looking at this gun the other day (to possibly being towed behind an RSO for the 2016 towed artillery build).

What is a "Divisional" gun? How would this differ from the PAK 40 for instance?

I presume that the Germans used these in abundance (indeed I'll answer myself here - as Miniart have just released one as a German version  )?

I noted the funky schemes and also that Mig Ammo had started doing the paint call-outs.

This is all very Kool ;)

Happy New Year!

Rob, this is my understanding, and I could be off in certain areas. The 76mm guns were considered divisional guns, meaning that each "Division" had an allotment of them to use however the Division commander saw fit. They could use these guns as pure AT guns, or in the Artillery role. As a matter of fact, I have seen more pics of the USV being used in the artillery role than anything else. The next step up was Corps level guns, an example would be the A-19, 122mm gun. Next up was the "Front" level guns, etc., I think ML-20, 152mm guns were front level. The B-4, 203mm tracked monsters were usually held in special reserve break through units. Scott or Mark, feel free to correct my inaccuracies if you see any.

Rob, thanks for opening this can of worms...lol. Oh, I have seen a pic of an RSO pulling one of these guns, also a ZIS2 57mm AT gun.

Rob, one more thing, I only do Cool....lol.....lol....lol

Couple more hours and not going as quickly as I had hoped, but this is a Miniart kit, lots of small parts to add together for each part....
