Universal carrier MkII with 6pdr

Post by Vlad Seabrook-Smith »

After much pondering and looking at my projects, everything is in paint progress, need to build something

I looked at the Humber MkIV and with the full interior felt it was a BIG project, so plumped for this one instead.

For such a small vehicle its a very complex build with lots of tiny parts, some of you may remember Rob built the MkI back on Model Armour,

hopefully mine will look as good!!

So construction starts with a very nice engine block in stage 1

next up stages 2 and 3 combined, these deal with the fuel tanks and a few detail parts

Stage 4 and 5 are immensely busy, and deal with the wheels and suspension, so I skipped that as I was in the wrong head space to deal with it, and jumped to stage 6
which is mounting the lower hull sides and sprockets.

This is my first Riich kit, and I have to agree with Rob, its very much akin to Bronco, in presentation, parts break down, engineering and moulding!

What does puzzle me :?: is the very complex suspension, that utilises real springs and looks..... going by the excellent instructions to work accurately! But then.............

......link and length track which cancels the working aspect  strange decision!

Vlad,

This is the less complex and simpler option?

Great work so far and the engine looks superb, shame it will be almost all hidden away!

Another great start to another super pairing :D

Nice one

Nothing wrong with a 6pdr

I think we have been starved of a decent kit for so long, everyone now wants to build one of the bajillion versions that have hit the shelves!

Its a work of art, sadly most will be hidden :( and sadly Inside the Armour has now ceased trading so no PE engine panels

It is indeed............ believe it or whatnot.

The Humber has a FULL interior, and comes with an opaque hull/turret and a transparent hull/turret, so any combination of the afore mentioned can be assembled to better show off the sheer amount of detail incorporated, so um yeah, this is the easy one!!!!

Another day another stage, this time back tracking to stage 4 and 5, I've also pulled in stage 7 as its not much effort to stick the running gear to the hull

The very scary suspension!! to be honest its not that bad, see photo, Ive opted to use the plastic core rods for the springs as the brass rod (top Corner) and etch discs don't really bring much to the table.

Image

I have a cup of Tea, and some quiet :D let us begin!!!

But before I do I must mention this, stage 7 shows the mud scrapers, mirror images as you would expect, sadly, part 9 on the PE sheet is totally non existent!!
See marks, part 10 is present! totally missed from the CAD
Rob can you remember if yours was thus?

Anyway back to that cuppa :D

Vlad - you are making light work of this :D Sorry I cant remember a problem with the mud scraper. The suspension I felt was quite straight forward and those springs are SOO much more effective that a moulded styrene alternative.

However I recall building the front seat supports with a cold shudder. I have one of these Mk 2s looming ( No surprise there!) I bought one of Chris Meddings etched sets to display the engine open and Royal Model do a resin "open" kit though it's hideously pricey. The engine is just too good to hide. It's great to see this being built and it doesn't seem to feature much on the web.

As to the 6 Pounder - it's a gem :D

Thoroughly looking forward to sitting back and watching
Oh and BTW - the Humber is 2 builds away though I suspect without the transparent body shell ;)

Man you guys are not making it easy with all these great builds going on. This looks like a really great detailed kit.

To bad about the tracks though, workable tracks would have been to much better.
