VK 18.01 / Panzer I Ausf. F

Post by Philipp Gross »

So, here we are with my first (of hopefully several) shelf queens waiting to be finished.

Image

This is Hobby Boss' VK 18.01, aka the Panzer I Ausf. F. It was about as heavily armoured as a late Panzer IV (80mm frontal, 50mm sides) but, as the designation suggests, only armed with two MG 34s, just as the classic Panzer I. Its intended role was that of a heavy infantry tank, creeping ahead at glacial speed with the advancing infantry. As you can imagine, the concept was completely useless and after a short interlude at Kursk the 30 tanks built were used up with various second-rate units far behind the frontlines. One is preserved at the Belgrade Military Museum.

The kit depicts one of the the prototypes, which had a few differences to the series production version, most notably the fenders. In addition I had to leave off a few parts, such as the smoke candle rack and the bullet splash bar on the hull top. I also decided to omit the tools, partly because these were wrong too, but also because I want to have a barebones prototype straight off the assembly line.

Construction so far is complete, so this will mostly be a painting blog. I added two MG34 muzzles by RB Model, but that's all. I also painted the tracks at an earlier point while doing other tracks.

Here's where I am right now. The fenders are not glued on yet.

To add a little visual interest, I removed one of the rear mudflaps. Also because I lost some of the etch that goes on there

My plan with this is a simple workshop scene with these two mechanics, who are just as confused as I about this weird contraption

Sorry, got a little delayed, as usual :?

I'll skip the primer and throw on the dark grey directly. We'll see later how much I'm going to regret this

That's the good thing about building armour. Mud and stowage is your friend to cover all those spots up.

It can be fresh off the assembly line right out to the testing grounds that was raining that day.
