King Tiger

Post by Gary Boxall »

Shelf Queens is something I'm certainly not short of  Trouble was choosing which one to pick for the GB as I only have 2 - 3 weeks in which I can keep modelling until our move. So, after a little deliberation, here's my entry...

For the life of my, I can't recall why this hit the proverbial brick wall :? Base kit is DML...

Image

.. with the usual PE (from Griffon), along with Friul tracks, turned brass scale track pins for the spare tracks (forget manufacturer), TMD mantlet and exhausts, Alpine figure (Hornet head) and some scratchbuilding. Primary reference source is this excellent book...

Just need to work out now where I was up to when I stopped and what to do next....

First job is to strip it down to its individual parts and blow/brush off some accumulated dust/dirt....

Nice one Gary - looks fairly complete to me? :)

Will it be a final production version?

It's a little deceptive Philipp as there are still a lot of small details to add and a few which need to be re-worked as by skills have improved a little since I last did anything to this. I'm looking at a late version so will need to modify the Friul drive sprockets to suit.

Thanks Rob.

One of the first areas to receive attention are the intakes. Protective plates were fitted from Dec 1944 and are supplied as options in the Voyager set. I wasn't at all happy with my initial attempts so redid them with a little more finesse ;)

I used Voyagers excellent brass bolt head set, soldering them into drilled holes on the plates....

These assemblies are then soldered onto the mesh sections....

.. and then fixed to their relevant positions using CA gel....

Image

Much happier now :D

Rear mudguards next....

Griffon provide some extensively detailed guards in their set....

Hinges are workable if careful with the solder...

You can also note the crank handle on the side. I scratched this using brass rod and tube.

Sweet work Gary,
He has a lot of shelf queens Vlad. Complete but unpainted models count to. I know he has a whole battalion of unpainted Shermans.

I love the King Tiger, but for some reason I have not built one yet.
