Academy M4A3E8

Post by Philipp Gross »

Did I mention the Shelf Queens Campaign is permanent? I think I did, but it can't hurt to say it again :P

You may remember this thing back from the final days of Modelarmour, when all the cool kids were building Shermans 8-)

Anyhow, a few bits and pieces of photoetch were still missing and there also was the issue of the wrong type of exhaust deflector for a WW2 Sherman. It seems like the stars were right today, so I grabbed that chunk of dust on the shelf, blew it away to reveal a Sherman and started fixing the problems. And there's where we are now, all ready for paint:

The Sherman is from Academy, the tracks from Trumpeter, the etch (mostly) by Eduard, the barrel is RB Model, the concrete armour Armorscale (yep, it's that old), antenna socket by Panzerart and finally the turret MG by Academy, though I might yet change that for a Tasca one stowed on the back. The figures are Miniart with Alpine heads.

Special thanks to Gary, who sent me the correct style of exhaust deflector quite a while ago.

And here's what it's supposed to look like in the end, a tank of the 12th Armored Division in early 1945 with a generous load of completely useless concrete armour poured on:

By the way...can anyone identify the little boxes tied to the front?

Thanks for looking :D

As promised, here's the result:

With so much resin and metal on the model it would be insane not to get a homogeneous surface first.

Painting this thing will be an interesting challenge, it looks like it had a worn winter whitewash already applied when the concrete was added. On the known photos it looks quite fresh and clean.

I guess I'll try my luck with hairspray again. The last time I did that it resulted in another Shelf Queen Sherman :?

Can I suggest you try the chipping fluids from AMMO Philipp? You get more control with them. :) I find the hairspray is a bit too hit and miss for my liking.

Sounds worthy a try. :)

Thanks for the advice! The last time went slightly wrong because I didn't seal in the base colour first...

Thanks Mark, I'll need it :?

With the Whippet out of the way, it's time to continue elsewhere.

The first paint layer, of many more to come:

Next highlights, gloss coat, decals, gloss coat, chipping fluid, whitewash, gloss coat, concrete and detail painting, oils, matte coat, pigments, done. I'm writing this down mostly for myself so I don't mess it up
