Thanks again! :)

John - I'll definitely try something like that, at least a wash to highlight the folds in the cloth. Some dirt might be appropriate too, considering the setting.

Small change of plans: I just received a sheet of Peddinghaus Italian camo pattern decal, I'll add that to his parka. They used that stuff for almost anything. More decal sheets with splinter camo are on their way from somewhere else.

My first try with the Peddinghaus camo sheet....it looks like rubbish right now but I have to wait and see what wonders Mr Mark Softer can do with it. On the trousers it worked just fine.

This is a clever way to get the patterns done properly. Good thinking Philipp :)

It looks wild Philipp

I never thought that decals could look so good, and be so "usable" on 1:35 figures :o

This could be a revolution in the making 8-)

Looking forward to when the decal has dried and shrunk into place ;)

well done being a pioneer here on PA, Philipp, and showing your decal camo figures :D

Has anyone else tried this yet??

Looking good

Thank you gentlemen :)

But I'd say you better thank Academy for including that small sample with their kit  It's these small gestures that make a difference.

That being said, here's the bad news. The Peddinghaus decals don't behave quite as well as the Academy ones. The decal film isn't really thick, but it's quite rubber-like and certainly doesn't conform to the surface details underneath as I had hoped. I'll try to add more decal softener to improve the appearance, but if it doesn't work, I'll soak him in water (or something stronger) for a while and rub it all off again. There's also something else that ocurred to me: I did use the splinter pattern decal sheet because there wasn't much hope that I could properly paint the hard edges and fine dark lines by brush. Italian camo doesn't have either.

Oh well...here's the progress. On the left side with the decals slightly shrunk after about 24 hours, on the right the "finished" figure with the other half still fresh and everything soaking in decal softener.

I wrote a feature on using Camo decals for MA Steve. In truth the reception from most was rather "sniffy", with the majority feeling painting was a better option. For the USA ACU featured in the last 2 - IMHO painting is near impossible. I think if you aren't confident enough with Camo schemes the Decals provide a very acceptable alternative particularly if you "shade" post-decalling.

Nice to see this Phillip - Keep it coming 8-)

For the modern digital camo Rob

There is no other way to go :D

Are those figures on the Hetzer, yours Rob?

Sorry Jagdpanzer 38(t) for the sniffy ones ;) ,

They all look good, and I think I remember the article.

As for being sniffy about "real" paint V Decals, I am not that good with either not to use what gets the best result 8-)

Thanks for the reminder Rob

Apologies Rob, your achievements were more or less completely forgotten by me :?

These do look fantastic, and yes painting digital camo by hand would be impossible.

Concerning my attempt, after several cycles of softener application and waiting for it to dry, there was no visible difference. Since there is no point in turning a finely detailed figure into some sort of 1930's hard rubber Elastolin lookalike, I just scrubbed off the decals on the parka. Once it's dry I'll try again by hand, either grey as originally planned or one more attempt at Italian camo.

So Philipp

The Peddinghaus decals Italian camo is not as good as the others, then.

I guess you an Raoul will be testing all the decals you bought to see if they able to be used on 1:35 figures ;)

Will you put a cheat sheet together at the end of the experiment?

Perhaps it might also be prudent to send out small samples to other fellow decal experienced modellers
of the ones that don't work to see if anyone else can perhaps break them down into submission 8-)

Nice one Philipp and a field grey parka with camo pants is not an unusual combination, is it ;)

Keep up the experimentation :D

Well, so far we had 3 versions...the sheet from the Academy King Tiger, which was printed by cartograf and was very good, the sheets from Peddinghaus which weren't very cooperative and finally the Shinsengumi decals which appear to be quite good too, as proven by Raoul's first attempt. I don't think there are any more companies out there who do this?

That being said, Peddinghaus might still be useful for more simple objects, like a Zeltbahn or just trousers with little detail.

Let me know if you want a chunk of the Italian stuff for experiments.
