Sd.Kfz. 251, Pak 43 and an unhealthy dose of olive drab

Post by Philipp Gross »

And here comes No. 2 of the halftracks...yet another 251, but slightly different this time. Believe it or not, the US Army used a fair number of captured equipment in the ETO. Especially after the hurried retreat from France in late 1944 a lot of material was left behind. In fact there was enough left to equip a few units with captured German weapons.

One of these units was the 733rd Field Artillery Batallion, which received a handful of 8,8 cm Pak 43 guns for use as light artillery until the stocks of captured ammunition ran out. To make it even better, at least one repainted Sd.Kfz. 251 Ausf. D was used as a gun tractor.

Here's what I'm going to use - Dragon's 251/7 Ausf. D. It's the wrong version, but there are all the parts included to make a standard 251/1.

Just a small impression of what we Germans have to endure when there are evil symbols of evil involved....

But it gets better - compared to the original release, Dragon has removed almost all the bonus stuff. No more figures, no more metal parts, but for much higher price...thanks Dragon!

Not counting the much different Pak 43/1 by AFV Club (which I also have), there's no other decent Pak 43 on the market right now, so the choice was simple:

Something to fill up the interior:

And a crew:

And just in case the heads are as they usually are with Miniart:

And just like Raoul I'm going to finish my BT-7s first. As well as the Pak 36. Shouldn't take very long

I've read, "trophy" as a good translation. Phillipp, if your kid wins the game, is he given a, "beute"? :D

If a wealthy old man has a beautiful young wife, is she a "beute Frau"?

I could go on. But I'll stop now.

And so the build turns into a linguistic debate before it even started

If you win something, you usually get a Preis. If it's a shiny gilded metal thing it's a Trophäe. Beute however can be more accurately translated as loot. A Räuber carries away his Beute...

I don't think there's a German term for trophy wife...not even a compound word

I'd suggest "spoils" or just "capture" since Beute always implies that it's been acquired against some form of opposition.
Of course "booty tank" has a nice ring, yarr!

I think a Räuber would rather more likely carry his booty than carry away his loot since he is not necessarily a looter but an honest robber :?:

Best regards

Raoul G. Kunz who thinks that maybe a a "plunder tank" would also be awesome! Especially since Plunder in German is a small cake...ish item of bakeware!
