The Next Group Build?

Post by Philipp Gross »

With the semi-official deadline now over, I guess it's time to look ahead to what may come next.

We'd be happy to hear your opinions - things to change, things to add, things to bury deep and never speak of again. Also potential topics, be they very specific or very general. Every input is most welcome. :)

A few things to consider:
Duration?
Fixed end or open end?
Very specfic or very open topics?
Build rules and guidelines?

As for my personal opinion: I think we should have a fixed end date, as far as I'm concerned it keeps the motivation up. Also, I guess we could use a break of a few months to sort projects out that have been neglected due to the group build. I wouldn't mind starting the new one in November or December.

As for topics, a few suggestions:
- Towed artillery, either with emplacement diorama or prime mover
- Heavy Tanks (Tiger, KV/IS, everything else large and immobile before the advent of the MBT)
- World War I tanks

Now please don't hesitate to add your ideas :)

As I haven't finished a GB yet

Open finish date or longer  a year perhaps 2016 and then a 2nd sub GB for the faster builders ;)

Subjects, :?:

See what everyone else says, as I have a project for 2016, ready and waiting, so it would be good if it fitted in,
so just to confuse everyone, I'll go for anything Russian 8-)

Starting 010116 :?:

What do you guys think :?:

I'd concur with Steve here and support the later cut-off date - though this of course will only cause me to try something new and/or more complex, maybe 20 figures or something like that and still miss den end-date by a few days .

Topic wise I'd try and go with something slightly weird...

maybe WWII vehicles in the 50s-70s
or interwar hardware and vehicles (this could of course already include some early WWII favourites in their pre-war markings)
perhaps alternative history scenarios and markings?

Best regards

My only thing is that we have a set start date next time. Going straight from the end of the vote to the GB starting the next day left no time to clear ongoing projects and get prepared. I'd also like the start date to be no earlier than New year may be even the begining of Feb. I agree with the fixed end date even though I didn't meet it this time around. I think that was partly having the GB over the summer though, too many other distractions.

As for subjects, I prefer the broad catergories. I really like the idea of WWI tanks, finally there is a bit of choice for that :D

My other suggestions would be

- Engineering and recovery(I know I suggest it everytime, I figure sooner or later people will give in and chose it :P :D )

- Recon vehicles

- Shelf queens, everyone takes an unfinished project and gets it finished (could be a sub group to a main subject or a shorter one in the lead up to the main one)

I still stand by my idea of O.O.T.B. 1985!

Any kit done entirely Out-Of-The-Box which was manufactured prior to about 1990. No resin, no PE, no special high quality decals, no figures unless they were included, no Hornet heads on figures which might have been included.

Paint and glue are all that's allowed from the modern era.

We should start the build on Wednesday, October 21st. Because that's the day Doc Brown and Marty McFly land in 2015 and Marty uses a hoverboard to evade the bad guys.

Where's my danged hoverboard! We were all supposed to have flying cars by mow!

I agree with starting on January 1st. I also agree with recovery vehicles

Shelf queens crossed my mind as well...I have far too many. How about making an official "clean up your shelf" campaign during October-December? That would give us a bit of free space to start something new next year.

As for old school kits with old school methods....this forum is exactly the reason why I can't do that any more :P

I say let's collect a few more ideas and then we'll vote as last time. :)

I'm definitely drawn to "Shelf queen".

How about a 3 month Single figure execise to take us to the new year - possibly a combined blog to share ideas - building on Vinnie's historical real-time team build/tutorials.

Rob

Addendum: And towed artillery gives far more scope than Engineer vehicles :?:

No more suggestions? :(

I know most of you are content with being loyal subjects of the Crown, but this time you really can participate in a democratic process - or else we'll make Gary the Forum Emperor and let him rule by decree :P

Sorry I'm late to the discussion. I'm working feverishly on finishing the current GB

I like the suggestions so far. WW1 sounds good but I don't have anything in the stash for that and I'd prefer not to have to buy something.
The Shelf of Doom is interesting though I don't think I could face those yet.
What would be classified as an Engineering vehicle? I'm not sure about what is and isn't. :?
Towed artillery would be interesting.

What about a T34 build?

I'd prefer a January start. I'd like to get the Bus done first. ;)

That's my 2 cents worth. :D

I guess engineering vehicles could include anything from an Opel Blitz with a field workshop on the back to the monstrosity Gary is building right now.

Of course we'll keep the old tradition of having two topics to choose from :)

A quick list of all topics suggested so far, in order of appearance:
- Towed Artillery
- Heavy Tanks
- World War I Tanks
- World War II vehicles post-war
- Interwar vehicles (1918-1939)
- Alternate History
- Engineering and Recovery Vehicles
- Pre-1985 kit OOTB
- T-34 and variants

And, of course, Shelf Queens, which I'd suggest to be a mini-GB during the final quarter of the year. :)
