80 Years of Kursk GB?

Post by Philipp Gross »

Hi Gents,

This year it's 80 years since the Battle of Kursk, by some accounts the largest tank battle of WW2. In any case it's certainly one of the most distinctive ones, with lots of unique German vehicles having their trial by fire there.

Vincent and I were planning to do a Ferdinand double build this year, but I wouldn't mind expanding the scope a little.

My suggestion would be: Any vehicle or aircraft employed around Kursk, with the GB's duration from June 1st until August 31.

I'm very much open to suggestions :D

Stupid question, but not really being a student of Russian or German armour of WWII, but is there a list somewhere of vehicles that would have been used at Kursk? Looking at building a Stug or Panzer III but don’t want to launch into the wrong variant!!

Hi Adam,

the most famous Kursk-era vehicles are of course the German heavies Ferdinand and Panther D, which premiered at Kursk. Several Tiger units were also involved (503, 505, GD and some SS units). Most German units used a weird system of geometric symbols that was only used during the battle.

For the Soviets it's less distinct...the most common vehicles were the T-34/76 with the hex turret and early versions of the SU-152, SU-122, SU-85 and the KV-1S.

A Stug III G or Panzer III J, L, M or N with skirts and no Zimmerit would be a safe bet. ;)

As for the duration, I'm open to suggestions :)
