DISCUSSION: 2018 GBs

Post by Raoul Kunz »

FELLOW PA MEMBERS!
BE PREPARED!
.
..
...

I know it's a bit early, but until year's end I suppose I'll have forgotten half of my ideas.
This is primarily here because I seem to suffer from a mild form of juvenile dementia   .

So I had a couple of ideas, one because of the year (duh...) and the other because it's an often overlooked but altogether critical topic.

Here are my suggestions for discussion, I suppose we could have another "2 options in a semester" build?

My first and most obvious choice would be a Great War diorama or vehicle or whatever, really any kind, up to and including concurrent and interdependent wars such as the Russian Civil War.
I'd suggest a special time frame for this build concluding at 11/11/18 ;) ?

Another topic near and dear to my myth-busting-historiographically-trained heart would be logistics.
An usually overlooked topic of rather supreme importance really... in essence the reason why Germany lost the war in spite of tactical and technological superiority in a couple of fields, the total disdain for the need to have an at least moderately dense logistics net inherent in the operational fetish to fight a war of movement at any cost governing German (and before Prussian) operations ever since the days of the Great elector in the 1680s caused the German states to loose about as many wars as they eneabled victories.
The huge plethora of trucks alone would make this a diverse and rewarding topic.... and of course it's not only trucks - feel like building some animals? Go ahead with horse drawn transport! Feel like going all out and doing some of the recent railway stuff? Got you covered there!

Obviously that are but two suggestions and we have four option, so bring here what comes to your mind by all means - maybe something way cooler than my suggestions pops up here! :D

Best regards

Very good ideas! I'm definitely in favour of both ;)

Maybe WWI for the whole year until 11/11 and two subjects for half a year each?

I may not be in the best possible situation to make suggestions since I havne't been able to finish a single GB yet - but still, I would love to see vignettes that has to include water in some way. Would be interesting to see different styles of making water. Snow/Ice would be another challenge.

Everyone is welcome to make suggestions - the whole ice/water thing certainly is something interesting I didn't think about :) !
Maybe integrates in another topic since it's so extremely generic? Or let it's "genericness" be an asset and open the field of options extremely wide?

I agree with all of the above. I would like to suggest antiaircraft as a subject. We discussed it last year in light of the artillery build and could expand it to be both AA and SAM.

We also talked about "Heavy" and "assault" tanks as a theme as well.

2 cents

Totally agree with WWI end date 111118 :D

We and every other modeling forum in the WWW will be doing it, so why not!

Global range of subject from 1914 to 1919, any location any time anything goes ;)

Not my favourite flavour but I can find something that will be useful, skill tester, push the envelope for me, so I am in :D

I have already raised other possible ones, but here goes

A base/building, if for no other reason, it makes use do something, we really aren't comfortable with, but really do need, to spotlight our
specialist subject.

As for a 3rd, GB, perhaps a global Shelf queen, any thing you had entered since PA started but never got over the finishing line?
And that could be a full 2018, running along side the others?

perhaps the odd short 8/12 week one too?

An OOTB build of a bizarre subject?
A bust or 75/120mm head/figure?
1/750 boat?
1/72 winged thing?

I am sure there are plenty of non Armour things, we all look at and think, "should I? Could I?"

Any other ideas?

I have a 1/32 beetle and a 1/35 Viper just waiting for some bench time

Funny you say that Steve, cause i am building a 1/350 submarine just to do something out of the ordinary.

It's the Bronco 1/350 HMS Victorious SSBN. Very much enjoying it too! Image
Woody...

Trying hard to do some modeling!

I have already raised other possible ones, but here goes
...holy cra*...
I totally failed to remember that you had already started a thread on this topic... It just jumped my mind to have one an I went ahead with it without looking if there already was one...

I suppose that what you'd call a dick move... :o  :?

Ships in 1:350 would be really something out of the ordinary here... and possibly armoured, even if its just against pressure ;) .
I already have a WW1 era German super-dreadnought (SMS Markgraf) somewhere here and it would legitimize building the very origin of the all-big-guns ship, Admiral Jacky Fisher's brainchild HMS Dreadnought - would also kind of fit any general subject as a floating add-on  !
I'd say stay with the 1:350 "big" scale (I know there's 1:200 around now, but that would be a rather inappropriate investment in time, space and money in my humble opinion...).

This could actually be rolled up in the "something with water" option if we can't put it anywhere else  .
I have a 1/32 beetle and a 1/35 Viper just waiting for some bench time
A Viper? What Viper? Not by any chance that Viper? Sorry, it's pretty annoyingly hot here right now and my mind probably jumps to pop-culture over-saturation induced idiocy  ...

How about a more general topic, i.e. "North Africa", involving land, air and sea forces?

Another interesting subject could be "minor nations of WW2", with countries like Finland, Poland or Bulgaria - of course the stuff of most Commonwealth nations would be identical to the British except for unit markings :P Like above, this could be open to any type of land vehicle, aircraft or naval vessel.

Hi Raoul, chaps

This is now the "official" blog, so no worries 8-)

I was just kicking around ideas, you have done it properly ;)

Yes that is the right Viper :D

One day

Some good ideas coming out, WWI must be a "winner" by now ;)

I shall plan one, which is on the theoretical drawing board already, something different and a challenge too ;)

As for the others I am up for a challenge, though it might be limited by a real world move which will necessitate some 1:1 scale
painting and decorating, after 25 years it looks like it is time to move on.

Modelling will really suffer, but real world issues, trump hobby issues

A quick update soon Raoul
