Color me impressed...

Post by Matt Parvis »

It isn't armour, but it is a machine gun and there are lots of those around here. Not the same model as this Spandau though:

This is from GasPatch Models who primarily do WWI aircraft accessories, although they also have a limited run of kits. I presume it is 3d printed since there is no way you are getting a mold to do the cooling jacket or the lever you can see on the side here that has a gap between the lever and the body of the MG:

No, those aren't giant tweezers, this is 1/48 scale!

Like I said, I'm impressed.

This 3D print stuff is getting very close to a critical mass. Low end, Windows-compatible printers will be at Walmart in the next 3 years. Great stuff like this Spandau will be the domain of specialty shops. But those shops will be able to charge lower and lower prices as things progress.

Fitting in with your comment John I also meant to say, these are €7 for two, complete with short runs of ammo.

Once again:

Seems to be missing the barrel inside the cooling jacket though? Possibly just the photo but if it really is missing then not so impressive.

Steve,

if you can't write a CNC program then a 3D printer will not solve your scratch building problems, in the same way things get scratched because there is no AM for the part you want it's unlikely you'll just happen to find the right 3D pattern out there on the internet.

Chris, it is missing the barrel in the pictures, that comes as a separate part, this piece is delicate enough as it is, so I figured I'd leave the barrel in its packaging until it came time to us.

Hi Chris

I guess the next after market niche will be progamme writers for all the bits you need for that one of a kind experimental whatsit or thingamybob :?

Just as well, as I am just getting my head around 1001 uses for lead & copper wire, and it really is fun too 8-)

It comes with a barrel too, that's really is impressive,

Time to get the next niche thingamybob off the drawing board and onto the bench ;)

Still impressive at 1:48
