Along the same line, is it possible to add a "view new posts" button that will appear in individual threads? Unless I am missing something (A distinct possibility) in order to get back to a listing of new comments from within a thread you have to go back to the board index.

Not sure that can be done Matt - sorry. You could just hit the back button on the browser to get back to the list?

If you go to board index/ home at the top of the boards menu there is four links to unread and active posts, that seems similar to the MA format

As Vlad said-
Board Index Page near the top left you will see these options:

View unanswered posts • View unread posts • View new posts • View active topics

One of those will do what you need I think-
