T-54 & T-55 Differences?

Post by Justin Wooding »

Hi chaps,

A call to the mob for some help here. Can you learned Russian modelers tell me the differences between a T-54 and a T-55 please? To me they are looking much the same basic tank

I know i can just google all this i'm sure, but forum discussion is a great way to learn stuff.

Woody. Biggest noticeable difference is the ventilator dome on top of the turret on the T54. T54 also had slightly different mudguards and a different engine.

To add to Gary's answer, some early T-54s have a different gun barrel without the bore evacuator. They also can have rounded engine grilles, different roadwheels.
You could write a book just on this topic ! BTW, WWP used to have one in their range. It covers T-54s and T-55s most of them in Polish or Czech service which means other ID features.

Thanks Gary and Olivier,

I have managed to spot the different barrels. I might have to search out some good books on the subject too.

I'm discovering some very cool schemes used by this versatile and widely used tank. Might have a bit of a T-54/55 bug :?

The Tamiya T-55A kit is a rock solid great kit, one of their best. I'm just wondering if it is easy to backdate to a T-54?

Hi Woody,

Don't know if I would say the Tamiya kit is rock solid, it is a good base well engineered with great instructions but does lack some details, don't get me wrong it's a good kit best T55 on the market currently. Legend makes a T-54 1949 conversion don't know what it's like but if its anything like their new TUA and ADATS kits should be pretty good. I don't remember any others maybe some of the 4BO gang know of others.

Regards,

Rod
