I really like submarines...probably because they're similar to tanks...but climbing around U 995 as a 5 year old might have helped too

Thanks Philipp! :)

Is U-995 in a museum?

Always good to try something new ;)

Is it due for a base or the stand?

The beached submarine we all saw recently was a cracker :D

Quick work too

Thanks Steve! :)

Yep, she is a biggun. 150 metres long 8-)

Model has gone together real fast, it's time for some colour research.

My intentions are for it to be just displayed on a stand. The kit one will do temporarily, but i will go for a nice wooden one eventually.

I do have some crew figures on the way to give a sense of scale. I hope they work :P

Yep, she's the only preserved Type VII left in the world: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-995

Well, major construction is done, just the fragile bits to go on at the 11th hour.

I bit the bullet today, despite the cold air, and went to the shed and hit the sub with some undercoat.

I used Tamiya Fine Primer out of the spray can. I thought i had grey but i only had white. I am enjoying this build so pushed on so the mojo doesn't fizzle. White is not my preferred choice under black paint :?

The white works perfect for the two Trident missiles though! :)

Anyway, i am very happy with the finish and no flaws in the plastic and seams. So a light rub back tomorrow after work to smooth the undercoat.

Next to work out the colours i am going to use. Need some shades of black and a dark grey. The instructions are not overly helpful here

Well, i got all excited today and went to the shed to get my first shot of colour on this project.

I used Vallejo Model Air Dark Sea Grey for the lower hull.

I have read a lot of modelers find the Vallejo stuff a bit hard to work with, so i don't know if i am a victim of that, but i don't think the cold air helped. I took me ages to get the paint thin enough, even though Model Air should be right straight from the bottle. And it sprayed like crap, and went all strange as it started to dry, blobbing and seperating. Not fun at all! :(

Sorry, no photos. As soon as i saw it was going bad i raced it to the kitchen sink and scrubbed it all off before it dried. At least i have a clean slate again :P

It was probably the cold air, or is this paint really unforgiving if conditions are not perfect? Anyway, i am off to order some Tamiya or Gunze!

This is a completely unscientific opinion and just personal observation, but I have had issues spraying anything other than Tamiya paints over the Tamiya white primer. I have not had the same issue with the Tamiya Grey primer. It may be just me, but what you describe also happened when I used Mig and AK acrylics on the white primer.

Hmmmm, interesting. Thanks for the input on that.

I found some Humbrol that matches the colour i need. So will use that. I have never had a problem with the good old Humbrol :D

No mate, since my failed attempt a couple of weeks ago, i haven't had time for a paint session. Not much bench time happening at all, just a little bit of plastic cutting happening on a flying machine project.

And i will be away in Wollongong for a week as of tomorrow. Taking possession of the new house :D
