Type XXIII

Post by Gary Boxall »

Started this monstrosity back in the MA days and it kinda sat up in the loft after we moved. After stalling on the latest Sherman build, decided to pull it out again.

Being 1/35 scale, this coastal U Boat by Bronco is certainly big. Goes together well enough even though it is lacking a lot of detail is some areas. The Shipwrights section of Armorama has certainly been a help when it comes to adding missing detail.

Image

Rungs are made from 15amp fusewire as is hatch handle. Spare PE replaces chunky kit navigation light plate. Main handrail is replaced with one scratchbuilt from styrene rod...
Image

Image

Welds are added using stretched sprue and missing sections (black lines) are Archer weld seam resin decals...
Image

Some rivet detail was lost while sanding down join lines between parts. I ended up removing the erivets here completely and in the process of replacing them with more Archer resin decals...
Image

Aperture on the top rear section was missing completely - I used a drain grating from a Miniart street scenec set to create what I needed...
Image

'Rectractable' bollards are added along with other minor details...
Image

Lots of detail completely missing inside the tower...
Image

Also had to drill lots of missing holes on the top too...
Image

Missing water cooling inlet was scratchbuilt along with extra detailing along hull sides for galvanic anode brackets...
Image

Still a way to go, but am stuill trying to figure out how the heck I'm going to paint this thing!!!!

What a comeback :o :D Now imagine a large boat like the XXI or the VII C in that scale...

Your upgrades are, as usual, sublime....

...I'll show myself out...

Thanks for posting this build Gary. These big subs are certainly eye catching and I really like all the extra detail you are adding. :)

Nice detail work. Needs a figure to help with scale.

GARY!! Glad you are still alive :D

Really great work on this. The extra scratchbuilding is taking it to a whole new level :ugeek:

I am book marking this project, going to be very useful for my one. I am slowly collecting stuff for a dockside diorama. Italeri docksides (which are very nice), U-Models figures, a couple of AFV Club trucks, still looking for some buildings and a crane that will fit the scene.

Trying hard to do some modeling!
