Return to Terra Firma dio

So, since the late summer and early fall are pretty thin in terms of modelling time, I rarely get a lot done. This year was no exception, although I did get some modelling done, primarily working on a diorama I've been planning ever since I won a set of decals in a model show raffle. The decals were for F-104 Starfighters in use by NASA. Having those in the stash I went through ebay and picked up an F-104 and X-15. The following is the end result:

The dio is 1/72 and it was certainly an enjoyable project. The period of rocket plane flight test is really interesting to me, so, I am very happy to add this to the collection.

PS. The flight listed is not an exceptional flight for the X-15, neither the speed or the altitude make it into the top five. Top speed, for those who wonder, was 4,520 mph and max altitude was 354,200 feet which works out to about 67 miles. Generally accepted edge of space is 50 miles. That is why they eventually gave the X-15 pilots astronaut wings.

Oh, it's not work that does it Rob, it wearing all the funny clothes and drinking beer at the Renaissance Festival that takes up my weekends, and therefore the lions share of my modelling time.

Thanks for the comments gentlemen.

That's really, really excellent, Matt.

I love the way you've done the heat staining at the chase plane's exhaust.

That's a beautiful composition! :D
While the X-15 looks really cool, to me the Starfighter with NASA decals takes the cake...it seems so oddly appropriate  .

Thanks guys, your kind words are appreciated.

Raoul, I know what you mean about the Starfighter. I've got another one in the stash, in 48th scale, that i plan to do with some other NASA markings at some point.
