F-104G Starfighter

Post by Jurgen Mares »

Hi guys.

FINALLY managed to get some time back at the bench :)
Picked this up relatively cheap on evilbay, unfortunately no decals so managed to source a Microscale set.

The kit literally fell together so in no time was primed, masked and painted.

Did a little light modulation here an there just to add some interest.
Doesn't seem to obvious from the pic but it's there ;)

Onto the decals.
Unfortunately, the Microscale set only has limited general stencils so had to make do with what I had.
The colour variation between some panels is a little more noticeable.

A top coat of Future applied in prep for a panel line wash.
Will set it aside for now and let it cure.

Great looking birdie :D Too bad the decals weren't included, that version from the box art looks like a what-if 1860's Royal Bavarian Air Corps version

During the active days of these things in Germany there was a joke....

"How do you get yourself a Starfighter?"

"Just buy a field and wait..."

Yeah...

Pre-shading looks good, all the Starfighters I have seen have been pretty weathered!

Hey Jurgen!

Nice project. I have a few Starfighters in the stash and have some anniversary schemes in mind. Masking that camoflauge is hell, but at least it's all straight lines and looks great when the tape is peeled off. Will be watching your progress :)

Sounds about right Philipp. The F-104 did have a not so good record and was also known as 'the widow maker' :|

Terrific aeroplane and sleek lines. First operational aircraft to be able to fly at, and sustain the speed of mach 2 8-)
Woody...

Trying hard to do some modeling!

Thanks guys.

Hit a bit of a snag with the weathering. Tried the oil dot technique on top of a matte coat and found the effect too dusty.
Didn't like it one bit. The more I tried to fix it the worse it got so in the end gave it a good wipe with a rag dampened with mineral spirits.
This seemed to get it looking a little better but still not overly happy with it.

Might try some dark and light streaking to see if that works better.
Will sit this aside till I come up with a better plan of attack :(

Thanks guys.
Guess it just hasn't turned out the way I imagined it.

Me either :)
Have to admit, I've enjoyed the change of subject although 1/72 decals.... I'll never complain about individual track links again :D
