Bizarrely enough, the source of the main 'ingredient' for this technique is from a pet store. Chinchilla Dust! Yep, you read it right. It's a very, very fine sand which these furry animals use to keep the coats clean. I found a 907g container of the stuff locally and it will last me a lifetime and beyond! I forget the price exact I paid but was probably around the NZ$20 mark. Very good value when you consider how long it will last. The second ingredient was sourced from the LHS - a bottle of AK Sand and Gravel Fixer....
As you can see, the dust is extremely fine....
I can easily see this stuff being useful for dioramas too.
Application is extremely easy. Paint the Sand and Gravel Fixer onto the area you wish to cover with a brush, sprinkle on copious amounts of dust, tip the model upside down and shake off the excess. Job done....
Admittedly I haven't done the next stage of applying paint over the top, but can see no reason why primer or any other paints won't go on without any issues.
