Anti Slip Coating
There any many ways to replicate anti slip coating out there and this is one I read about a while back but have only recently tried it out.
Bizarrely enough, the source of the main 'ingredient' for this technique is from a pet store. Chinchilla Dust! Yep, you read it right. It's a very, very fine sand which these furry animals use to keep the coats clean. I found a 907g container of the stuff locally and it will last me a lifetime and beyond! I forget the price exact I paid but was probably around the NZ$20 mark. Very good value when you consider how long it will last. The second ingredient was sourced from the LHS - a bottle of AK Sand and Gravel Fixer....
As you can see, the dust is extremely fine....
I can easily see this stuff being useful for dioramas too.
Application is extremely easy. Paint the Sand and Gravel Fixer onto the area you wish to cover with a brush, sprinkle on copious amounts of dust, tip the model upside down and shake off the excess. Job done....
Admittedly I haven't done the next stage of applying paint over the top, but can see no reason why primer or any other paints won't go on without any issues.

Great idea! I`ve often used chincilla sand for adding texture to groundwork , walls etc..

I think it would make a great 1/35 scale 'desert sand' too providing it was painted.

Re: Anti Slip Coating
Thats.....unusual. But I really like the way it looks. I think this might be the best method to do anti-slip yet.

Have to take a look for that stuff the next time I am in the Pet shop. I have not seen the AK Sand and Gravel fixer before, have alway been a little nervious about ordering products like that on line. Some don't react well to being frozen which is what tends to happen to them in Air Cargo. Have you got an alternative to the fixer Gary?

I see no reason why diluted PVA glue or even gloss varnish (maybe with a retarder) wouldn't work?

Somewhere there's a sad little rodent who can't get his coat clean.

Re: Anti Slip Coating
Gary's right. I did this myself with both PVA glue and varnish and it worked twice. The advantage of this method is you don't have to mask your model like in many other methods.Gary Boxall wrote:Rod

This dust gives a nice rendition for US antislip coating. It remains too fine for the Israeli one.

Re: Anti Slip Coating
Olivier - interested by your comment on the Israeli anti-slip. What would you use?
