Beutepanzer Pz.kpfw.KW I B 756 (r)

Post by Bryan Krueger »

My latest project is the Beutepanzer Pz.kpfw.KW I B 756 (r). A one off field conversion mouting the 7.5cm KwK 40 L/43 to a captured KV-1 cast turret. Some research suggests this was used at Kursk, but details are scarce and only one photo exists of this unique vehicle.

This build is based on the Trumpeter German Pz. Kpfm KV-1 756 (r) Tank kit no 00366 which is a real let down. The kit includes the incorrect hull along with a host of other incorrect or missing details. Neil Stokes does an in-depth review on his website. 4BO Green. His review was very helpful for correcting the mistakes. I replaced the hull from another KV-1 kit I had in the stash.

I interpreted the photo as best I could to add the missing details such as the rear deck stowage rack, left front stowage locker and right rear stowage frame. I also raided the spares for the headlight replacement and improved commander’s copula both donated from Dragon sprues.

The Voyager PE set for the KV-1 756 (r) I used makes some of the same mistakes as the Trumpeter kit, nor does it add any of the missing items. I also added an Eduard set for the air intake and exhaust screens and raided the spares for the fender brackets. Other racks and bits were made from styrene strip and “L” channel.

The far side of the tank - left hand driver's side - is a complete mystery past the front corner so I added a few items for variety.

The tracks are Fruil ATL-51 and went together quickly this time with very few of the links needing to be drill out.

That's an interesting and unusual KV1 Bryan. Nice clean build too. :)

Thanks Vincent! I don't know how long it will stay clean.

Paint has been applied along with first filters and dark wash. Kit decals snuggled down surprisingly well.

Wonderful work as usual Bryan! I really like how you added all the little features based on the single photo, a pity there aren't more around.

This particular KV was always high on my build list. I think I might shamelessly copy your build when I get around to it

Thanks Philipp! It just so happens the new KV Tankograd book includes a second image showing the side view of this vehicle. Turns out I'm a little off of the position of the rear stowage deck and the fender rack is apparently my imagination. Oh well.

Model has been finished:

Wow, they actually found another photo??? :o

Don't worry....you simply have the state two weeks later after Hans and Fritz finished their upgrade work. Their buddy's great-great-nephew's barber told me so
