German Cargo Trailer

Post by Vincent Power »

I bought this kit when it was on sale last year. I have a fondness for trailers and was very pleased to pick this one up. :)

The kit is a typical Miniart product loaded with good details and a positive fit for most parts. Best of all, it's an interesting subject with lots of possibilities. Construction was pretty easy although the cleanup of mold lines on a lot of parts is tedious. I'm not a fan of the front seat arrangement provided in the kit so I left it off. Miniart gives you a choice of four markings, but in reality, you are only limited by your imagination.

Painting should be easy and weathering will be fun. :) A simple diorama is on the cards too. ;)

Cheers,
Vincent

Fantastic job Vincent! It's such a simple vehicle, but Miniart really put some effort into it!

I already told Vincent in private, two of these were still sitting in a field outside town a few years ago. Too bad back then I didn't anticipate the need to take any reference photos :?

A bit more progress on the Trailer. I'm painting this using the Black and White technique pioneered by Jose Lopez. I really like this method of painting and I've used it on a number of builds so far. I figured my Trailer would have been used and abused during its life, like most utilitarian vehicles, so I spent a good part of the day putting the chipping and weathering together using various shades of gray, white, and black. This is what I ended up with. :)

I'll tidy up this pre weathering stage and then apply the base coat next.

Some more progress to report. The b/w technique calls for one colour over a black and white base to allow for the painted pre-weathering details to show through. The tri-colour camo I chose meant that I had to mask each colour, without covering any other colour. Nothing simple here :D Luckily it turns out to be easier than I thought. I used a piece of Tamiya 18mm tape for each side of the trailer. I drew the shapes I wanted on the tape, carefully cut each colour into individual pieces and placed them on the model. Then it was just a case of removing each piece, painting that colour and letting it dry before carefully replacing that segment of the mask. The next colour was done the same way until all three colours were applied. Each colour was thinly applied and I painted the lightest first and finished with the darkest. After all that fiddling about I am pleased with how it turned out. ;)

Now I can move on to some more weathering. :)

My Cargo Trailer has some actual cargo at last. :D The fuel drums are a mixture of Miniart and Tamiya items and were great fun to paint and weather. So much fun in fact that I may have overdone it on a few of the drums

Now that came out nicely :D The drums look perfectly fine, especially considering the corrosive contents and how they were usually handled. How about some figures pumping fuel into jerry cans? I think there are some suitable sets around ;)
