G6 Rhino Takom

Post by Olivier Carneau »

Hi all
to change from the usual Russian and Westerner vehicles I decided to tackle this South-African howitzer.

This is huge!
Takom did a great job as the details are very nice and the fit is so far excellent. The hull is the 5 part type: floor, upper deck, sides, rear plate. The steering is workable provided that you don't glue 2 jacks a later stage. The firing struts and the anchors are workable too.

The build starts with the struts and the anchors. Some parts remain mobile so it's a bit complicated to keep the sub-assemblies together until you glue them to the hull sides.

The driver compartment is built straightforward. Takom give some painting instructions but not for all the accessories. So I used my artistic license there.

So far I have assembled the driver station and glued it to the hull sides. I later added the floor. Before adding any details I will glue the rear plate, the upper glacis and the upper hull deck to get a complete hull.

Here are some pics.

Really great start. If you have any questions about the Rhino, you should hit up Stephen Tegner on FB. He's an armor enthusiast in South Africa. I think he's building a large scale version of this.

You are off to a good start Olivier. :) Any chance you could place something next to the build to give a sense of scale?

Cheers,
Vincent

Thank you Bryan for the tip.

Here are some pics from today progress. The hull is done with the help of CA glue. I have probably missed to properly align some of the 5 parts for the hull.
The right suspension is glued with no issue. The right steering stuff is glued too. The small jack, the one running through the front panel, should be left apart to have a workable steering. You could probably cheat by cutting the front end of the jack.

And Vincent I introduce to you Maurice so you can see how large is the vehicle. ;)

Vincent
concerning the size this gun makes the US Marines AAV-7 look small. (if you're familiar with modern stuff)

Welcome aboard Shawn :D

Here is the current status of the beast. Hull is nearly complete. Turret is on its way and goes smoothly.

The cold temperatures outside this morning gave me the perfect excuse to keep on building the turre twhich is nearly complete.

The PE parts assembly around the turret basket went smoothly except for the angled one which is slightly too long.

This beast looks so very much like 80s SciFi.....not that I'm complaining

Nice progress so far! How is the overall fit? My first encounter with Takom was their new Panzer III, and it wasn't quite as perfect as you'd expect from a new kit.
