Re: Academy/Airfix Panzer IV Ausf. H

Before potentially ruining the hull with my pigment whitewash I gave it a try on the turret. To my relief it turned out okay

The only visible markings on this tank are the turret numbers. Originally I wanted to apply these using Eduard self-adhesive stencils, regrettably even their smallest version turned out too large. Therefore I had to make my own, using masking film. Beforehand I printed the numbers onto paper and put the film on top to carefully cut out the numbers using a fresh scalpel blade. Thankfully no curves, otherwise I might have printed decals instead.

Still need to do some minor touchups, then I'll start the washes.

Very nice result. What is the pigment white wash technique?

Thanks everyone :D

About as simple as it gets: Just mix up some white pigments with water and brush it all over the model. Basically just like the real stuff. Once dry you can rub off most of it to get the degree of weathering you need. An overspray of Tamiya thinner fixes everything in place. Afterwards you can still do additional chipping etc. with your method of choice and also add oil washes.

I'm not done on the hull yet but here's a preview:

On the hull I've already added the overspray, the roadwheels are still covered in fresh pigment paste.

I used the same method for improvised desert camo on my SdKfz 223 a while ago:

If they give me a free sample of their kit I might reconsider a lawsuit

Whitewash and oil wash are done:

The real tank has plenty of snow caked around the running gear, I'll have to experiment a bit with the products I have at hand.
