If you have not pre-cut masks the best way is to cut a basic shape and fill the gaps with tiny pieces as you did.
You're now ready for the painting.

Just to prove I have been doing something on his monster....

Pin wash applied, oil paint dot filtering done, starting to work on the chipping and then finally on the environmental effects :D
