Mapping is a technique to increase volume, and create tonal variations as well as highlights or shadows in the paintwork. I've simply applied it to my rust shades but it could equally be used on a winter whitewash for example.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Vincent

Thanks Vincent, I get the concept but what is the technique and why is it called "mapping"?

The following is from the excellent publication "FAQ Frequently Asked Questions of the AFV painting techniques" by Mig Jimenez published by Andrea Press. This book gives a clear and simple description of the mapping technique as well as many others. I highly recommend it.

Thank you very much Vincent, I shall seek out a copy of that book immediately! ;)

Edit: Hmmmm, looking at the price demanded by the sellers I may have to pass on this one...... :o

Try the interweb and you tube for visual representations of mapping and when it is represented in other ways.
There is usually something somewhere that gives you a good explanation without buying an expensive book.
Though doing regular searches both on E-Bay and the interweb can eventually give you something that is a reasonable price.
