AMX 13 Mle51 type 2A
Hi all,
here are some pics of my current project. This is a AMX 13 light tank as deployed during the Suez crisis. I started from the Heller kit and backdate it with a lot of scratchbuilt parts and some PE parts I got from a Spanish producer.
The Heller chassis depicts the latest version so I had to remove the suspension details and create a new suspension.
I also altered the return roller positions as the early running gear had only two instead of four on the latest version. The front shock absorbers are scratchbuilt.
The front end was also a piece of pleasure ! Here is the new gun travel lock. The legs are longer than the later versions.
The lights guards were made from styrene strips. They are not perfect but look the part.
The rear needed some improvement too. I still have to make a new towing pintle.
I improved the sprockets a bit and tried to make the early idler wheels. The result is not satisfactory but I know how to improve the idlers now.
I had to add 12 bolt heads to each roadwheels to depict the early type.
The angled side bins are PE parts but I may change the RHS ones for styrene as there is a problem with the exhaust shield.
The turret got its part of the job too. Mine is not as good as Gary's on his Egyptian Sherman but it will do the trick.
Here is how it currently looks.
I still have to make the new idlers and add some details here and there. The tracks will be the Friul steel set. The decoration will be one in the Bison decals set.

Amazing work so far Olivier!
With all the backdating done it really looks like some late war Waffenträger .
Really nothing to critique in all honesty .
Best regards

I think I should complain a lot less about my M50
Outstanding work Olivier! We could certainly use more up-to-date kits of French armour, including postwar vehicles.

I don't think I could offer much feedback. It looks great to me.
How about the smooth surfaces? Was the actual tank smooth or did it have a rough cast texture? How about casting marks and numbers? Did it have those? Chains? Ropes? Stowage? Did the tanks used in the conflict have any unusual features, colors, or markings?
A figure in proper period uniform could be a nice addition.
Otherwise the tank looks excellent as you've built it.

Excellent work Olivier. This has been a big inspiration and help with my FL10 turret.
From my reasearch casting marks generally seem to be absent on most vehicles. Possibly due to where they were made? Only marks I've seen are on top of the mantlet tube and even less times on the commanders cupola (on the flat horizontal face to the middle).
Only thing I can pick up on is the lack of tool clamps. Are you going to further detail those as they look like they are meant to be a clip in fit where the real ones are obviously different.
Even so, this will look great under paint
Gary

Thanks for the kiond comments guys. Some answers : there is no anti-slip coating on this tank. The first one in the French arsenal to get this stuff was the Leclerc.
Gary, I know what you mean about the poor tool clamps. I'll improve the rendition as they are not that accurate as you mentioned it. Not a big deal, just some more time to spend on this area

Olivier
I think you have done a fantastic job on making a silk purse out of a sow's ear - would be a shame if the tool clamps weren't 'blinged' up a bit. Great to hear you're going to address that. Certainly going to be a show stopped when finished!

As I wrote above I decided to change the exhaust shield which was wrongly shaped and not really accurate. Hope the new one is better, at least it looks so
I also modified the rear bin.

Re: AMX 13 Mle51 type 2A
Here are the latest pics. They show the horn and mirror with their guard. The mirror still misses its securing device.
I'm assembling the Friul tracks. They perfectly fit around the sprockets but the roadwheels and the return rollers need to be thinned which is a bit annoying.
